GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) The Mavericks have been preparing for the season opener since the end of last year's disappointing 4-7 season.
Now, with a full season under head coach Russ Martin's belt, the Mavs are primed to succeed this year.
They got off to the right start Saturday night against Menlo College, shutting them out 34-0.
Red-shirt freshman quarterback Aric Kaiser began the game for the Mavs but gave way to another red-shirt freshman in Kyle Duran midway through the first quarter.
Duran got the job done, throwing for 142 yards while rushing for an additional 33 and one touchdown.
The guy who carried the offense tonight was running back Jake Cimolino, who gained 125 yards on 15 carries with two scores.
Of course, the defense was in high-gear, not allowing a point to Menlo College.
As a team, the defense came up with four sacks and an interception.
The Mavs play at Montana State next week on September 14.
