GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) The Colorado Mesa Mavericks started up their season over the weekend. While they have yet to start play in the in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, they've already made an impression opposite some top-ranked teams.
Libero Sunni Rae Baird left her mark in their first tournament. The Mavs' lone senior was named RMAC defensive player of the week, racking up 81 digs in 13 sets of play. She now leads the conference in digs and digs per set.
They finished the weekend tournament going 3-1, only losing to the host, number 15 Angelo State, something that was not expected from this young squad.
"It was exciting for us we needed it," said Baird. "We needed to go in and make a change and make a difference. We had no respect going into the tournament so to be able to come out with those wins is huge for us."
