GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. After beginning the year with a record of 2-3-1, the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team made an incredible run as 2013 wound down.

The Mavs won five of their last six regular season games, then the final three to claim the RMAC tournament title.

It wasn't quite enough however, and they were snubbed from the NCAA regional tournament.

This year, the expectations are a bit higher for new head coach Todd Padgett and his team. They are predicted to finish second in the RMAC based on the preseason poll.

Padgett likes where his team sits right now after two good scrimmages with DU and Otero College, and now they just need to have a fast start when the season begins.

"In that first weekend," Padgett said, "we'll number one: really have a good idea where we're at, and number two: we could set ourselves up, of course with a success remainder of the year, to really have a legitimate good chance at getting into that national tournament at the end of the year."

The Mavericks begin the season September 5th against St. Edwards at Walker Field.
