GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. It was a familiar match-up for the CMU Mavericks, who went 3-2 against CSU-Pueblo during the regular season. The Mavs were in this same spot one year ago at Suplizio Field against this very same team, competing for the RMAC tournament title. Only this time, they were hoping to be on the right side of the scoreboard.
Like most of their games this season, they wasted no time getting on the board. A double play that scored a run and an RBI single from Derek Garcia put the Mavs up 2-0 after the first inning.
Nate Robertson and Jordan Liester added RBI singles later on in the contest, and paired with superb pitching from starter Kyle Davis and Tyler Dunnington out of the bullpen, the Mavs held off the Thunderwolves by a final of 4-2.
It's their 11th all-time conference tournament championship. They earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney, though that was never in doubt. Saturday's win should also solidify the Mavs as a regional host for the tournament which begins Thursday.
The win also improved them to 27-0 at Suplizio Field this season, and 40-10 overall, which is the seventh time in the last eleven years they've reached 40 wins.
CMU now awaits their first round match-up, which will be decided by the selection committee at 8:00 PM Sunday.
