GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Zach Thorpe connected with Martin Zupan for a 37-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats their first win of the season, 19-14 over the Warriors at Stocker Stadium on Friday night.
Fruita Monument (1-4, 1-0) struck first with a touchdown run from Vince Grasso in the first quarter. The sophomore running back carried the ball 21 times for 146 yards.
Central (1-4, 0-1) answered in the second when Joe Smith punched one in from a yard out to tie the game at 7.
The game remained tied until the final minute of the third quarter when Thorpe ran for a 5-yard touchown. The extra point was tipped, leaving FMHS with a 13-7 lead. Thorpe had 102 rushing yards on 16 carries and was also 9-20 for 135 yards in the air.
Taylor Sanchez used his legs to get the Warriors back in the game. The junior quarterback rush 18 times for 112 yards and a touchdown, which gave Central a 14-13 lead. Aaron Wallway also cashed in 106 yards on the ground.
After Thorpe's touchdown pass to Zupan made the score 19-14, Central had one last chance. But Fruita Monument's defense came through as Braden Bair sacked Sanchez to end the game.
Fruita Monument is at Durango on Oct. 8. Central hosts Grand Junction on Oct. 8.
