Mavs Ready For Tough Season Opener

GRAND JUNCTION - The Mesa State Mavericks toughest challenge of the season could very well be the opening game on Thursday night against West Texas A&M at Stocker Stadium.

West Texas comes to Grand Junction with the number eight ranking in the country according the's top 25 poll. Mesa State is ranked 21 in that poll.

The Mavs have experience with teams from the Lonestar Conference in Texas. Last year the Mavs lost in the first round of the playoffs to Abiliene Christian, a team from the Lonestar Conference, and a couple of years ago the Mavs lost to West Texas on the road.
