REPORT: Mountain West Making Push For BCS Auto Bid

MCLEAN, Va. (AP) - The Mountain West Conference is pushing for an automatic annual entry into the Bowl Championship Series' postseason lineup.

USA Today reported on its web site Monday that presidents and chancellors of the league's nine schools, along with Commissioner Craig Thompson, will press for a meeting with BCS coordinator John Swofford, to discuss an automatic berth into the BCS.

Conference champion Utah finished second in the AP Top 25, earning 16 of 65 first-place votes after it finished an undefeated season by beating Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl. But the Utes had to force their way in to the four big-money games, which also include the Fiesta, Orange and Rose bowls.

Only champions of the six BCS conferences - The ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC automatically qualify.

An auto bid isn't going to solve it. Only the top 2 get to duke it out for the title. Due to biases inherent in all the voters AND their primary information source (ESPN SportsCenter) nobody really knows who should be ranked where. There is not enough inter conference play to sort it out, so the mathematical algorithms can only approximate. What is somewhat safe to say is that the team deserving to be named the champion is in the top 16 ranked teams. 8 is not enough. This year there were 7 one loss teams and 2 undefeated. That's why a 16 team playoff is needed. We've already dilluted the importance of the bowls through corporate sponsorship and adding so many bowls that just about every 6-6 record team gets in a bowl game. The BCS has turned into a beauty contest determined by style points. By the way, I'm a Gator. We were almost cut out in 2006. Ohio St, Michigan, USC among others said we didn't deserve the bid. We destroyed the "unbeatable" Buckeyes 41-14.
