GRAND JUNCTION - Mike Provencher hit two homeruns and the Mesa State baseball team made a statement on Thursday afternoon with a 7-4 series opening win against third ranked Chico State at Suplizio Field.
Provencher's first homer was a two-run bomb in the bottom of the third inning which landed about ten rows into the left field bleachers and tied the game at three. His second was a solo shot in the fifth to give Mesa it's third lead of the game 5-4.
Josh Meagher hit two homers, the second came in the top of the third to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead before Mesa came back.
Jason Fronczak (1-0) pitched five complete innings to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed seven hits, four earned runs and walked a batter in the win.
Garrett Carpenter pitched four innings of one-hit, shutout baseball to earn the save. The save is Carpenter's first of the season.
The Mavs are scheduled to play a double-header against Chico St. on Friday beginning at noon, and then will play the series closer on Saturday morning at 11:30.
