GRAND JUNCTION - The Mesa State baseball team has earned at least a split with the third ranked Chico State Wildcats in the Mavericks first four-game home series of the season.
The Mavs lost game one of Friday afternoon's double-header 6-4, but came back to earn a 8-5 win in game two.
Mavs catcher Grant Vickers gave Mesa State the permanent lead in game two thanks to a first-pitch solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 6-5 lead. That win gave the Mavs a 2-1 lead in the four game series.
Wildcats pitcher Mike Robbins carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game one against the Mavs. The Wildcats provided Robbins with a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth inning when the Mavs made a run.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Robbins walked in the Mavs first run of the game but still had his no-hitter in tact. But then Vickers broke up the no-no with a single into center-field that scored two runs. All four of the Mavs runs were scored in the sixth inning.
The Mavs (4-2) and the Wildcats will meet once again on Saturday morning at 11:30 at Suplizio Field.
