ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic says he hopes to recover from back surgery to return to the ice before the end of the season.

Sakic, who also broke three fingers in a snow blower accident on Dec. 9, underwent back surgery to repair a herniated disk on Jan. 7. He's played in just two games since experiencing back problems in early November and has two goals and 10 assists in 15 games for the Avalanche this season.

Sakic said Thursday he's just starting rehab from his back operation.
