GRAND JUNCTION - The Mesa State mens' basketball team was right where it wanted to be for the opening round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday night. On it's home court.
Unfortunately for the Mavs, that is the exact same place their season came to an end in a 64-59 loss to the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.
The Mavs trailed late in the second half but capped a comeback when senior guard Ryan Matthews hit a long jumper from the inbounds pass by Aaron Markham to give Mesa a 49-47 lead.
Marc Williams led all scorers with 20 points and gave the lead back to the Thunderwolves when he hit a late three pointer for a 57-56 lead.
Jase Herl and Jake Swartzendruber each recorded double-doubles for the Mavs in the loss. Herl finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds and Swartzendruber added a team high 14 points and 11 rebounds.
CSU-Pueblo advances to the RMAC Shootout where the Thunderwolves will face number one seed Metro State on Friday night. Metro State defeated #8 UC-Colorado Springs 84-78 on Tuesday night to advance to the next round.
