GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - The weather was cold, tempers were hot and the offensive was almost nonexistent on Saturday. But the Mesa State baseball team managed to beat New Mexico Highlands 4-3.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by Marty Rover. At that point, Highlands Coach Steve Jones began a tirade at the officiated crew (he had erupted over a ball 4 call moments earlier) and was promptly dismissed by the umpire.
New Mexico rallied later in the game, tying the score at 3-3. But in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, the Cowboys walked in Rover to give the Mavericks a 4-3 win.
Mesa State and Highlands will finish their four-game series at Suplizio field on Sunday at noon.
