Air Force Hockey Advances At NCAA Tourney

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Andrew Volkening made 43 saves, and Derrick Burnett and Jacques Lamoureux scored in Air Force's 2-0 victory over Michigan on Friday in the first round of the NCAA hockey East Regional.

Air Force (28-10-2) will face the Yale-Vermont winner Saturday night in the regional final. Michigan, the no. 1 seed in the region, finished the season 29-12-0.

Burnett opened the scoring on a power with 4:42 left in the first period, beating Bryan Hogan with a wrist shot into the top-left corner. Lamoureux made it 2-0 at 7:02 of the second, taking a pass from Matt Fairchild and sliding the puck past Hogan.

Michigan, shut out for the fifth time this season and the first time in 71 NCAA Tournament games, outshot Air Force 16-3 in the first period and 43-13 overall, the Wolverines were 0-for-7 on the power play, failing to
convert on an early 1:19 5-on-3 skating advantage.
