GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - The Mesa State softball team battled the elements and the opponents to win a doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.
The Mavericks took the field about an hour late on Saturday and played through soggy conditions against the Cowboys.
But it was important for the team to get the doubleheader in because the day also served as a fundraising drive for the orginazation Swing For Life, a non-profit group dedicated to fighting breast cancer. (For more information and to learn how you can help, visit www.swingforlife.org)
The first game was a pitcher's duel that needed extra innings to be decided. The game was scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning when Gabriella Parra hit a walkoff double to the wall in left-center. Danny Vallie scored the winning run and the game ended 1-0.
There was no such drama in the second game of the doubleheader as the Mavericks' bats heated up in an 18-4 victory. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Mavs and lifted their record to .500 in the RMAC (13-13).
Mesa State will play a four game series at Western New Mexico next weekend.
