GRAND JUNCTION - Senior Sadie Peavler led the Mesa State Mavericks women's golf team with a school record 69 at the first round of the Quality Inn Mavericks Spring Invitational at Redlands Mesa Golf Club.
Peavler made five birdies in the opening round as the Mavs hold an eight stroke lead over Grand Canyon University at the end of the opening round. Peavler played bogey free golf on the back nine to finish three under par.
Mesa State is in first with 311, Grand Canyon has 319. The next closest school is 38 strokes behind Mesa. Regis University is in third with a team score of 349.
Peavler leads the individual standings by five strokes over Grand Canyon's Jennifer Lutz. Lutz shot a first round of 74, two over par.
Mesa State's Jessica Berve tied both Peavler and teammate Afton Balling for the most successful par putts on the day with 11. Berve is in third place in the tournament with a first round score of 76.
Balling is in sixth with a score of 81, Jennifer Hilts is tied for ninth after shooting 85 on Monday, and Brittani White is tied for 18th with an opening round score of 91.
The second and final round of the Invitational will begin on Tuesday morning at Redlands Mesa Golf Club.
