CMU Football: Spring game brings defense

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Most universities with football programs host an annual spring game to give their fans a little taste of football during the its hibernating months.

Mesa took to the gridiron Saturday, but fans who were looking for an offensive explosion came away sorely disappointed.

There were only two touchdowns scored during the game, both on 14 yard runs. The biggest takeaway game was the play of the defense, especially walk-on lineman Mitch Irwin.

Irwin recorded 4 sacks, although he'll tell you it felt more like 6. More importantly he played with the insatiable motor that makes defensive coordinators drool. Irwin hopes his solid outing will be enough to carry him to the top of the depth chart this spring.
