GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Colorado Mesa came from behind to defeat conference rival CSU-Pueblo in the final seconds of the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
The Mavericks were left playing catch up for nearly 39 minutes of play on Sunday night. The full court pressure from the Thunderwolves stumped the Mavs early in the game, but eventually they figured a way around it and never let up.
After CSU-Pueblo jumped to a 75-67 lead with just over two minutes on the clock, the game looked to be all but lost for CMU. However, back-to-back 3-pointers from Landon Vermeer and Mike Melillo, split up by a Thunderwolves turnover, put them right back in the game, trailing 75-73.
They fell behind by two, but again, Melillo answered from the arc, and it was a 1-point ball game with 1:16 on the clock. Their defense stayed strong, while their offense produced for the 79-77 lead.
The icing on the cake came in the final five seconds when Joe Kiely blocked CSU-Pueblo's final attempt at a layup - coming from their leading scorer Nate Tigner. The Mavericks finished with the 79-77 victory .
