GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Colorado Mesa Mavericks wrestling team wrapped up their season last week with a win over the School of Mines Orediggers.
Now it's on to this weekend's NCAA regional competition taking place at CMU for the first time since 1985.
CMU finished 11--5 overall, 5-3 in conference, while bouncing around in the national rankings to ultimately end the regular season at number 18.
This coming weekend they open up regional competition, featuring 16 wrestlers in each weight class looking to finish in the top 3 in order to advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
It won't be an easy battle for CMU's team as California Baptist and RMAC foe Western State, both ranked higher than Mesa, come ready to take those top slots, but coach Pipher knows he has a handful of wrestlers ready to hold their own.
"We've got four or five guys ready to go," said Pipher. "We've got a couple other guys that have got some injuries going. We feel real good about three. We've got three guys right on the bubble there, and then some other guys have got to really get after it this weekend."
James Martinez, Jessie Hoffschneider and Chester Granard all enter the tournament ranked in the top 8. The NCAA DII Regionals and RMAC Championships will be held at Brownson Arena. Competition is this Friday and Saturday, all day. The top three in each weight class advance to nationals in Cleveland, Ohio.
