GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. This spring the Grand Junction Rugby Club entered into its fourth season. Just two years ago, they reached the state championship but fell short of the title, finishing as the runner-up. This season, they have another opportunity to finish on top.
The club has been unbeatable all season long, bringing in a 7-0-1 record. Their only tie came against Ridge View Academy, their opponent for this Saturday's state championships. Still, the past doesn't worry the team.
They are having their best season to date, changing up their strategy from "bash and crash" rugby to more of a kicking style, just one part of a game plan they feel will easily bring them to the top.
"We work together every practice to make sure everything is perfect," said senior captain Gaven Pacheco. "We try to run everything to a 'T' to make sure everything is right so that when we go out there, everything works out okay."
"We're going for a state title," said head coach Doug Evans. "This is the second time in four years that we're going for a state title. We expect this year to bring home the title instead of being runner-up, and I've got full confidence in these kids that they can do it."
The GJ Rugby Club plays on the road at Glendale Stadium Saturday at 11:00 AM.
