Grand Junction lacrosse coach loses his locks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Coaches try a lot of different things to motivate their teams. Some yell, others post inspirational quotes on locker room white boards; others, just let it grow.

Four years ago James States told his lacrosse team that he'd grow his hair out until they swept their two game season series against the rival Fruita Monument Wildcats.

“It’s really special," says senior Jacob Knight, "because the past four years we’ve gone 1-1 against them, so it’s a pretty big deal for us”.

This year they won game one, and saw an opportunity for coach's mop to go. In an exciting game Thursday night, the Tigers realized their dream.

"It was awesome," says coach States, "just a great win to end the season".

The hair came off, to the disbelief of some.

“I never thought I would see the day" says former player and now coach Stuart Foster, "I thought he’d be rocking in the free world forever”.

And some people were even upset to see it go.

“Yea I don’t like it when he cuts his hair" says his son, senior Kris States, "His head looks bigger or something”

In the end his removed ponytail will grace a wall in his office, as a reminder that this was the year his team played so well it knocked the hair right off his head.
