GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Montrose had locked up the SWL, and likely a top seed in the 4A playoffs prior to Friday's game, but Central still had everything to play for.
On the wrong side of the CHSAA playoffs committee for the last couple seasons, the Warriors could lock up an automatic qualifier with a second win over the Indians.
The Warriors were coming off a "what-if?" game with Grand Junction, where they lost a game that may have gone the other way had a controversial call been reversed. That game was quickly put out of mind, as they raced out of the gates taking a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Seth Krebill started for Central, as Michael Price threw over 160 pitches Tuesday night, but he had a terrific outing, allowing just five hits in a complete game effort.
Central goes on to beat Montrose for the second time this season, and finish in a three-way tie for second place in the SWL with Grand Junction and Fruita Monument at 6-4. The tiebreaker comes down to which team has the best record against the best team in the league, and since Central picked up their second win against Montrose, they qualify for an automatic bid for the CHSAA playoffs.
