GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The (1) Montrose Indians will pack their bags and hit the road for their first road trip of the post-season set to face off against (5) Pueblo South.
This year the red and white have had success on all sides of Colorado, posting an 11-and-1 overall. And while a 5 hour bus ride can be a drag, these guys went 5-and-0 on the Front Range during the regular season, including a huge victory over defending state champion Monarch (a team still alive on the other side of the 4A bracket). so they're ready to put their best foot forward once again.
Looking back in time, it's been awhile since Montrose has reached this level - 5 years to be exact, and that was a time before Coach Todd Casebier and the current guys on the roster.
Since then the squad has fallen early in the playoffs. Now they're the top seed and have been a deadly force throughout class 4A. Though they've had a few bumps along the way (including a 4-game injury absence from star running back and defensive back Angelo Youngren), overall they haven't missed a beat. Now they're ready to keep it that way with a healthy squad.
"We're very excited because we haven't been here in really forever, since I've been playing," said junior Mike Rocha, "but the whole team's excited and ready to go down and do what we do."
"Anyone on this team hasn't played a road playoff yet in their career so it's definitely going to be some nerves going," said senior Angelo Youngren.
"We're going to have to play our best game," said head coach Todd Casebier. "They have a fine football team, and they're playing at home. They have a lot of momentum, they're going to have a great crowd, going to be a tough atmosphere, but if you're going to advance you've got to find a way to get it done.
