GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The Cedaredge Bruins were a team that entered 2012 as the underdogs.
They had never won a state title in the program's deep history. The last time they even played for a title game came in 1994, but 2012 held a different story. The blue and white went on to claim the 1A state title in a two-point victory over the No. one ranked Buena Vista Demons.
Now the reigning state champs may have lost their "big-six" - as in last year's starting seniors - but there's still plenty of talent running around those Cedaredge hills, starting with quarterback Trent Walker.
Last season he stepped up in wake of an unexpected concussion to senior starter Dante Markley, and Walker didn't disappoint. He and Markley led the team to the biggest win of the season.
This year the Bruins have seven returning on both sides of the ball and while guys like Carter and Cade Wasser may be hard to replace, there's plenty of young talent and upperclassmen strength ready to tackle 2013.
"I think it's even better than it was last year," said senior Austin Gartman. "I think we're better this year for sure. Everybody just gets along, and we have a good time, so that's a real big part to the game and stuff is getting along."
"These kids are hungry for it," said head coach Brandon Milholland. "They kind of have this idea in their head that they want their own championship, and they're good kids. They learned a lot from last year, just the experience of being in the playoffs and going that far into the playoffs."
The team's first game will come Friday, August 23rd at Eagle Valley. Their home opener will be Friday, September 13th against Dolores at 7:00 PM.
