HS Football: Central should compete in 3A WSL

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. You have to go back to November 3, 2001 to find the last time the Central Warriors won a football game. Then you go back to 2004 for the last time they put together a winning season at 8-4. Needless to say, it's been a tough time for the guys cycling through the program, especially in the last two years, where they have a combined 0-20 record.

But with CHSAA realigning the former Southwestern League teams, Central might be the team that benefits most from it.

They were moved into the 3A Western Slope League, clearing teams like Montrose and Grand Junction from their schedule.

Now with a full season under his belt, second-year head coach Shawn Marsh has his system in place with the team, and it looks like Central may truly be ready to put together a winning season.

"As a coaching staff," Marsh said, "we're able to put kids in a situation for them that's going to make them have a better chance to succeed just by knowing them and their skills."

"All I see is motivation," said senior quarterback Wyatt McElwain. "We can only go up from here."

The Warriors begin their season on August 29 when they host the Air Academy.
