HS Football: (2) Palisade's rally falls short in quarterfinals

By  |

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Palisade Bulldogs went through the regular season, largely by getting out to big leads and piling it on their opponents in victories.

While they were able to make an impressive comeback in round one of the CHSAA 3A playoffs against Lutheran, they couldn't repeat their performance Friday night at Stocker Stadium.

After scoring an opening drive touchdown that ate up 8:30 of the clock, the Titans scored 17 unanswered points.

The Classical Academy led 17-7 late into the third when Palisade's Dalton Hannigan made an interception.

Quarterback Levi Hoaglund and the Bulldog offense turned it into points with a bomb down the sideline to Tass Crow to make it 17-14.

Midway through the fourth quarter after another defensive stop, Hannigan ran the ball into the end-zone to give Palisade the lead back.

That's when The Classical Academy began its winning drive down the field.

The Bulldogs seemed to have them on the heels when it was fourth and eight at midfield, but Titan quarterback Jantzen Ryals completed a 20 yard pass to receiver Nick DeRay to keep the drive alive.

The drive ended with a one yard end-around rush by Peter Troupe that all but sealed the game with just 33 seconds remaining.

Palisade got the ball into Titan territory, but ran out of time.

The Classical Academy moves on to the semi-finals, and Palisade drops only its second game of the year, 24-21.

They finish at 10-2 overall.
