GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Fruita Monument volleyball team is already in Denver resting up for the start of the state playoffs taking place in less than 24 hours.
This marks the first season the Lady Wildcats have advanced to the 5A state championship since 1981. They've had a strong showing this year - first taking the SWL title, then hosting regionals and coming out with a ticket to state.
Just 12 teams earned a spot at this level and just four will advance to the semifinals, but no matter the outcome Fruita is proud of where they've landed and realize every game could be their last.
"It's definitely emotional," said senior Joelle LeFevre. "It's sad, but again, you'll never get this opportunity again so you want to take advantage of the moment and go all out."
"The goal was to kind of get to state," said head coach Bob Richardson. "At this point we're just going to go and be loose and enjoy the experience, not to say that we're not going to try to win, but we're going to try to be loose and not feel a lot of pressure, and maybe catch some teams off guard and win some respect."
The state tournament will be pool play. Fruita Monument has been pooled with Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista. Play begins at 8:00 AM Friday. Winners of each pool advance to the state semifinals.
