GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The Mavericks are practicing this week with a high spirits.

For the first time this season, the Mavs are on the practice field with a victory to their name. CMU defeated Black Hills State 31-29 last week.

The Black Hills State Yellowjackets gave the Mavericks a good run for their money, as indicated by the final score. But, Colorado Mesa will have to turn up the intensity this week when they host the Highlands Cowboys.

New Mexico Highlands is 3-1 this season, and, in the words of CMU head coach Russ Martin, "they are very talented."

Martin will also likely make a game-day decision as to who will start under center this week.

The opening week starter, Deke Cisco, is day-to-day as of Tuesday with a left ankle/foot injury. Cisco's backup, Jason Haferman, started last week and is preparing to do the same this Saturday.
