GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Colorado Mesa set the tone for the afternoon game against New Mexico Highlands by putting up 16 points in the first quarter, but that lead would eventually slip away.

Though they managed 465 total yards, the Cowboys brought in 539 and fought to the final minutes to pull out the 40-36 victory.

Mesa held the lead, through five touchdowns, with Jason Haferman leading the way in the QB spot. Jake Cimolino was his right-hand man, bringing in two TD's of his own and registering 251 total yards.

The Mavs fall to 1-4 on the season, and will play at Western New Mexico University next Saturday, October 6th.
