GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The Lady Mavericks weren't picked to finish first or second in the RMAC according to the preseason coaches poll.

They were supposed to finish third, or around that neighborhood.

There's a far more important poll, however, that the Mavs are making waves in.

After a 12-0 start to the season, the Lady Mavs are ranked eighth in the nation. For the first time since March of 2002, Colorado Mesa is back in the nation's top ten. The Mavs were ranked seventh in 2002.

Head coach Taylor Wagner says the Mavs avoid distraction by not talking about the rankings during team sessions.

"We're trying to get better, and still doing the drills we were doing at the beginning of the week," Wagner told KKCO 11 Sports Director Phil Stafford.

"It's nice for the program and our fans [but] those rankings will change so much that it's the end of the year stuff we're looking for," Wagner added.

The No. 8 Mavericks travel to CSU-Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
