Mavs wrestlers expect tougher matches ahead

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The combination of talent and experience is demonstrating its value for the CMU wrestling team.

Colorado Mesa is 10-1 this season heading into the thick of conference action.

About this time last season, the Mavs barely kept their record around .500, but senior Jon Gappmaier says the team's experience is kicking in.

"We're comfortable. We've been here before," he said in reference to heading into the conference schedule.

As for Nick Petersen and Paco Retana, this season is their first time through the RMAC as reigning conference champions.

Petersen told KKCO 11 Sports on Monday that he's expecting tougher matches from his conference opponents.

"We have to bring our 'A-game,'" commented Petersen. "Since everyone knows [we are RMAC champions], they are going to wrestle us like we are."

The Mavs travel to Nebraska on Wednesday to face Chadron State for an RMAC dual on Thursday.
