GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Number one seed Colorado Mesa rallied their way to a win over sixth seeded New Mexico Highlands in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional.
Both teams were scoreless through two innings, but in the third New Mexico capitalized on a couple CMU errors while delivering a few well-placed hits. They led 3-0 and added three more in the fourth off a Matthew Chavez three-run home run.
Colorado Mesa struggled against Cowboys' pitcher Blake Harrison, unable to get through until the seventh inning when Derrick Garcia got them in the game with a two-run homer to trail 8-2. In the next inning, the Mavs continued their rally and tied up the game at eight.
In the top of the ninth, NMHU stood with two on and two outs when Garcia made the diving stop at second, getting the out and stopping the run. CMU responded in the bottom half with the game-winning run courtesy of a bases-loaded single from Garcia, capping off the rally for a 9-8 win.
Colorado Mesa advances up the winner's bracket to play St. Edwards at 3:30, a team that is in a win-or-go-home situation. New Mexico Highlands falls to the loser's bracket and will play (5) Tarleton State Friday at 12:00.
