GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. For the second straight year the Mesa Mavericks returned to the RMAC Shootout title game, and after losing their last regular season game to Fort Lewis, w were watching to see how they'd respond after a loss, being that they hadn't had to do that all year.
Their round one victory was a bit sluggish, but they looked like one of the best teams in the country Friday night.
Saturday they'd need just as much; the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets are a much improved team that when they met earlier this year.
But the title game played out like the majority of the games we saw from CMU during the year: they dominated the second half.
With just a five point halftime lead the Mavs cranked up the defensive intensity, and led by Christen Lopez's career-high 25 points and four steals, the Mavs rolled 73-55.
Lopez was named tournament MVP, while Sharaya Selsor and Aubry Boehme joined Lopez on the All-Tournament Team.
Selection Sunday will determine where they land in the NCAA DII Tournament.
