GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The GJ Rockies appeared to have lost game one of the South Division Championship in the tenth inning.
Their opponents, the Ogden Raptors, had scored on a wild pitch from Scott Oberg to take the lead 3-2 in the top of the tenth.
In the bottom of the inning, with two outs and the Rox down to their final strike, David Dahl ripped a single up the middle of the infield and Juan Ciriaco advanced to third base.
Next up was Wilfredo Rodriguez and he pushed a single through the gap on the right side of the infield to score Ciriaco and tie the game at 3 runs a piece.
Once again, the Raptors pounced in the top of the next inning by scoring a run off of a single and a walk.
That left the home team down to their final three outs. The first batter in the box, Correlle Prime singled. Then Matt Wessinger advanced the base-runner, Cesar Galvez, to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Galvez would move up to third on a ground out by Michael Ramirez. And then the excitement kicked in.
The first pitch to the Rockies next batter, Jason Stolz, was low and away from the right-handed hitter. Eric Smith didn't field it cleanly and Galvez decided to try his hand at stealing home.
On a split second decision, Galvez raced home, but was beat by a short toss from Smith to the pitcher Alan Garcia. And that was it.
The Raptors win in a thrilling game 4-3 and they take a 1-0 series lead.
The teams will play the final game(s) in Ogden. The series is a best-of-3 series. Game two is Saturday at 7:00pm.
