Russ Martin keeping an open mind toward QB battle

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- First-year head coach Russ Martin says the competition for the starting quarterback position is wide open.

2011 was a terrible year for Maverick quarterbacks. CMU used four different starters and five different quarterbacks overall in the 11-game season. Only one of those QB's had a completion percentage higher than 48.1 (Chris Henderson - 60.0%).

This year, Coach Martin hopes the battle for the top spot will help prepare the candidates for play. Right now three returning players - Deke Cisco, Jason Haferman, Chris Henderson - will be battling a transfer for the spot.

"For the most part, it will be those four," said Martin on opening day of fall practice on Thursday. "We're going to get them battling and we're going to let them get after it."
