Vern McGee out as Central football coach

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- KKCO 11 Sports learned early Tuesday evening that Vern McGee is stepping down as head coach of the Central Warriors football team.

McGee confirmed to KKCO 11 Sports' Director Phil Stafford that he will not return as head coach next season. McGee informed his players of the decision Tuesday night at the team banquet.

The Warriors finished last in the SWL with an 0-10 record this season.

McGee told KKCO 11 Sports that he has become aware that Central High School is "losing kids to surrounding schools." McGee continued to say that he does not want potential students steering away from Central for any means, especially the football program.

For that reason, McGee is resigning after 23 years as a coach for the Warriors, 17 of those years as the head coach.

McGee will remain a teacher at Central and he also intends to continue helping Chuck Yost, the head coach of Central's baseball team, in the spring.
