"The Pit" is CMU baseball's secret weapon, opponent's worst nightmare

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. If you've been to a Colorado Mesa home baseball game, you've certainly heard them.

They're the Mavericks' dedicated group of fans, affectionately titled: "The Pit"- which is what they are for the visiting teams.

The Pit doesn't necessarily have big numbers, typically bringing in between 10-20 CMU students each game, but sitting behind the plate adjacent to the vising dugout, their presence is that of a much larger group.

"They're our 12th man," head coach Chris Hanks said. "They bring atmosphere to the park and they do it in a classy, fun way."

The Mavs are 20-0 at Suplizio Field this year, and it's very possible The Pit has had at least some influence in that.

Their loud remarks are two-fold: cheers and support for the home team, and unrelenting trash talk and badgering directed at the visitors.

The Pit is surprisingly unique, as it's rare they'll yell out the same thing twice in one game. They do their research, reciting players' statistics, nicknames, or any other information that could be useful to getting inside their heads.

As CMU wraps up their final regular season homestand this weekend, it's a relief for other RMAC schools, but some unlucky teams will likely be right back at Suplizio in the conference tournament, where The Pit is bound to be operating at its highest level.
