HS Baseball: Central drops Horizon, Brighton squeaks by Fruita on Opening Day


GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Opening Day for high school baseball in the area, and we'd get a look at some of the Southwestern League teams in the first games of the Bill Fanning Classic.

Grand Junction, Fruita Monument, Central and Palisade are the host teams, with Greeley Central, Horizon and Brighton were visiting. With the new wildcard points system in its second yearthat determines who makes the post-season, every game counts- not just the inter-league contests.

Aided by a five-run second inning at Suplizio Field, the Central Warriors began their season with a win, 11-4 over Horizon.

At Canyon View Park, Fruita Monument fell into an 8-3 hole, but had an excellent third inning, tying the ball game up. In the fifth however, Brighton got a two-run base hit to go ahead 10-8, which was the final.
