GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Palisade Bulldogs girls basketball team is off to a great start this season, in somewhat of a turnaround from 2012.
Last season, Coach Danielle Bagwell entered into her first year as head coach, but in no way was she unfamiliar with the program.
She latched on with Palisade athletics in 2003, and after 10 years, she earned her way into the vacant head coaching position. Under her leadership the girls worked to learn the new system, ending 10-14 overall.
This year, they look to have gotten the hang of things, kicking off the season with a 4-0 start, 2-0 in league, and they know why there's a difference.
"[There was] less of a learning curve last year," said Coach Bagwell. "We came in and had a summer last year to learn everything but just putting it into play is a little bit different so this year we have a little leadership, more leadership, just due to experience."
"Last year was kind of our building year, getting everything, getting to know her more as a coach and this year it's kind of we know her good enough now, and we like her coaching style," said senior Cruz Maestas.
The Palisade Bulldogs host the Holiday Invite beginning on Thursday. They'll face Rifle at 4:30 PM.
