HS Football: Delta returns again with high-powered offense

DELTA, Colo. The Delta Panthers football team didn't have an incredibly convincing regular season a year ago, which is why their run to the semi-finals in the 3A CHSAA playoffs was a bit of a surprise as a 13 seed.

Now they are ranked second in their class in the preseason poll, and for good reason. The Panthers return the majority of their play-makers from 2013 including running back Jonny Pounce and senior quarterback Cade Gafford.

In fact, eight of their 11 starters return, so expect their offense to be as dynamic as ever, though Gafford will need to find a new favorite target with Ryan Whiteside now playing at Colorado Mesa.

"We have a good group of receivers," head coach Ben Johnson said. "I think they're eager to prove themselves and I think they'll do a real good job."

"We came out here day one and just hopped right back into the offense," Gafford said of the majority of the offensive starters returning. "It gives you confidence coming into the game that you'll know what to do and your guys will know what to do."
