HS Football: Gutsy win down the stretch for Fruita Monument

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) It had been almost a month since the Fruita Monument Wildcats had won a game.

That came way back on August 23 during zero week against Adams City.

Saturday night at Stocker Stadium, that had a huge obstacle in the way to end their losing streak: a very talented Highlands Ranch squad that was riding a two game win streak.

Early in the first quarter, an awkward hit to the head of Wildcat lineman Nate Hammond left him lying motionless on the field for about 15 minutes before he was bussed off in an ambulance.

To the relief of everyone at Stocker, he returned to the stadium towards the end of the game to watch its conclusion, as no serious injury was suffered.

This game came down to the final few minutes of the fourth quarter.

Trailing 17-10, the Wildcats put together an impressive drive aided by a couple pass interference calls.

The drive put them inside the Falcons' ten yard line, where quarterback Jacob Lynch optioned it to his back Juston Erekson who smashed his way into the end zone to make it 17-16 Highlands Ranch.

FMHS Coach Sean Mulvey didn't send out his extra point them, like many expected.

Instead the Cats went for two, and ran a similar play that they had just scored on, only Lynch kept it for himself and pushed over the goal line to put his team up 18-17.

The Falcons responded by moving the ball into Wildcat territory, before pressure up front forced quarterback Keaton Thames out of the pocket.

His attempt to throw on the run was partially tipped from behind and went right into the arms of Matt Story to ice the game.

Fruita Monument ran the ball a few times to drain the clock and collect the win, improving to 2-3.

FINAL:
Fruita Monument 18
Highlands Ranch 17
