GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. With the recent approval for Central football to playdown to 3A, .the Southwestern Conference may not be in existence for the 2014-2016 cycle.

Just four teams would remain - Durango, Montrose, Grand Junction, and Fruita Monument. In order to work through this next cycle and provide an even playing field, District 51 athletic director Paul Cain submitted a proposal to disperse the four teams into various conferences throughout the Front Range.

The move would still allow for the Fruita-Junction rivalry game in a non-conference match up. It would also hold the possibility for those two to continue play against Montrose.

This wouldn't be the first time the Western Slope has participated with the Front Range. Grand Junction was the only 5A team on the Western Slope in the 80's and early 90's, so they participated with other conferences and found great success.

"The four schools - Durango, Montrose, Fruita and Grand Junction - feel it'd be better for them to be in a true conference with more teams so they would have to get fewer non-league games," said Paul Cain. "Splitting them up divides the travel amongst several leagues in the two-year cycle. We're just asking those schools in that league to travel one time."

The CHSAA football committee will meet December 5th to solidify all school proposals
