GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Over 350 swimmers from the states of Colorado and Wyoming are competing in this weekend's GJ Swimming Invitational.

The event is hosted by CMU's Maverick Aquatics and it offers local swimmers an opportunity to qualify for the Western Zone Invitational, which will be held at the same pool in August.

"Swimming in this pool - the same pool I'll be swimming in for zones - will be very beneficial since I'm used to it," said Mavericks' club swimmer Taylor Kidd.

Aspen's Charlie Meichling qualified for the Zone Invitational in the 200 free. "I'm super excited to go to Zones and represent Team Colorado," Meichling said.

The Western Zone Invitational is similar to the JUCO World Series that Grand Junction hosts every year. Approximately 800 swimmers from the western region of the United States will compete in the Zone Invitational in order to declare themselves champions of the region.

Swimmers can also qualify for Olympic Trials during the invitational this weekend.

The Olympic Trials will be held in Nebraska next month.
