Challengers learn from big league players at JUCO

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Challenger Baseball has been taking kids out to the ball game for 14 years now, getting them in the game with thousands of "buddies" over the years.

Every year, the Challengers look forward to playing with some real big league players, when they team up with players and coaches from the Junior College World Series.

Challenger Baseball hits the mound to bring special needs kids together with the community, to enjoy a fun-filled season of baseball just like any other kid.

"I love playing softball and softball is one of my favorites,” says one young team member. “And I’m just so excited to be here."

Joining together with community leaders and local athletes, the kids get a kick out of learning from their "buddies.”

"It was actually really fun to be here right now with my manager and all,” she says.

They're not the only ones. Buddies say stepping up to bat with the Challengers reminds them why they started playing in the first place.

"This is great because I think sometimes we get so competitive, and it's a game is such a big deal to us,” says one of the members of the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks softball team. “But really when it comes down to it, playing a game is about having fun. And like playing with these kids today I think reminded us of that."
