GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- The no. 10 Gordon College Highlanders blazed past the no. 2 Jefferson College Vikings in a 20-13 victory.
The top of the first proved that Jeffco would not go down without a fight. Fred Ford homered to center field, bringing in two RBI and setting the tone for what would become a slug fest.
The Highlanders' Devin Bonin stepped into the game and quickly produced a double to right center, leading the way to four runs off four hits.
After Gordon outscored Jeffco 3-1 over the next two innings, Ford stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and homered to left center making the score 7-8.
In the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth, both teams failed to score. But in the end, this proved to be the calm before the storm. Both teams then combined for ten runs, splitting evenly at five.
The momentum continued into the bottom of the sixth as Jody Stone homered down the third base line getting three RBI. He helped give the Highlanders the lead they needed in order to seal the win as the Vikings stalled over the last three innings.
Jefferson College moves down to the elimination bracket and will face Shelton State at 3:00 pm on Wednesday.
Gordon College will advance in the winners' bracket and face San Jacinto at 7:30 pm on Wednesday.
