GJ's Owen Taylor signs national letter of intent with University of Kansas

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Only about two percent of high school athletes are awarded scholarships at NCAA colleges and universities, but Grand Junction senior baseball standout Owen Taylor snagged one with the University of Kansas.

On Wednesday, Taylor signed his national letter of intent to play third base with the Division One Jayhawks - a member of the Big 12.

He's worked endlessly pursuing his dream - committing solely to baseball through his high school athletic career - and it's paid off. Through three seasons he's risen as one of the Grand Junction's strongest competitors. He finished his junior season with a .483 batting average, 4 home runs, an .862 slugging percentage, and 31 RBI.

Now he's ready to take those stats to another level and carry on the "Taylor" legacy.

"I just want to make my family proud, make myself proud," said senior Owen Taylor. "I want to make my Grandpa Gene proud, and that's why I worked so hard. I just wish he was here today, and I'll carry it on well.

"That's what we do this for as coaches is to just try and give the kids opportunities to continue their baseball career and move on," said Grand Junction head baseball coach Donnie Alexander. "Kansas is going to be a great fit for Owen, and he's going to have a lot of great opportunities to be able to play some really great baseball."
