When Butch decided to make a move from Los Angeles to an area more conducive to raising a family he referred to the Internet. He programmed what he wanted in a town and Grand Junction came up as number one. Several days later he saw an opening for a TV weatherman on the western slope.
“How often do you get a chance to live where you want and do what you love to do?” Butch says.
Butch was born in Muleshoe, Texas and grew up on a farm near Bovina in the Texas Panhandle. “We have the fastest dogs in the world out there, because the trees are so far apart” quips Butch. He worked his way through college as a disc jockey at local radio stations. His first TV job was in Amarillo, then he moved to Tyler, Texas. From Tyler, he was offered a job in Oklahoma City to join his brother Ben hosting a morning show. The McCain Brothers, with Ben anchoring the news and Butch forecasting the weather, dominated morning TV for 12 years, at one time with a 58 share. Butch interviewed country singer Garth Brooks when Garth made his TV debut on their morning show. Butch has more than 15 years of weather experience in the heart of tornado alley and has done the weather for ABC’s Good Morning America, and most recently hosted numerous live feature segments for the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles.
Seven years ago the McCain brothers moved to Los Angeles without a job or even a promise of one. They have been working as full time actors/writers and producers ever since. If Butch looks slightly familiar he has appeared in a series of independent films such as Biodome starring Stephen Baldwin, Humanoids From The Deep starring Robert Carradine and Emma Samms, Midnight Blue with Harry Dean Stanton and Dean Stockwell, Born Bad with Corey Feldman and James Remar, Outside Ozona with Robert Forester and Penelope Ann Miller, and Dean Koontz’s Mr. Murder with Stephen Baldwin and James Coburn.
Butch has also done numerous TV shows including several appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show, In the house, Martial Law, Nickelodeon’s All That and Keenan and Kel. He has guest-starring roles in several soap operas.
Butch has done a few national commercials too. He played a sportscaster in a Pepsi commercial with NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon where Butch says ”Stick a fork in Gordon - he’s done.” The commercial debuted in the Superbowl when the Broncos won.
In addition to Butch’s film and TV work, he and his brother have recorded 3 CD’s. The brothers wrote or co-wrote all the songs on their last two CD’s. Two of their songs are featured in the Showtime movie Humanoids, in which the McCain brothers co- star. Nine of their songs will be featured in the independent film Rubbernecking staring Corbin Bernson. They have been featured guests on The Nashville Network and Hee Haw.
Butch and his brother have written screenplays and have had several of their projects optioned for feature films. They still have their entertainment company in L.A.
His favorite activities are spending time with his wife of 17 years, Betty, and two children: Augusta (7) Mac (5). His hobbies include: traveling, hiking, scuba diving, tennis, woodworking and being outdoors.
