Got the blahs? Life Coach Sheri Fisher has tips on how to beat it.

She joins 11 Today Anchor Lauren Whitney with more on beating the blahs. Plus, she discusses the difference between the blahs and the blues.

She says her clients will sometimes tell her, “I often feel like I'm just going through the motions of life without any sort of overarching focus. I've been in subsistence mode, just doing what it takes to get through each day.”

Many times people are simply bored with their lives. It doesn’t mean they are not busy; they are just bored. They have no excitement for their work, their relationships, their hobbies, etc.

This is different from the blues or suffering from depression.
Depression is a serious illness that would require the help of a professional counselor, psychotherapist, etc.

The BLAHS is simply feeling bored with your life. Life is good AND it’s boring!

It’s easy to get into a routine – you do the same thing every day. You get up, get ready, go to work, have a meeting over lunch, possibly stop by the grocery store, come home, make dinner, watch TV and go to bed, only to get up and do the same thing again tomorrow. Over and over this routine plays out and even though it’s comforting, it can also be boring.

Sheri has some tips to Beat the Blahs!
*Establish your focus
*Visualize what you want it to look like
*Set goals
*Recruit supporters
*Reward yourself
*Keep your eye on the prize

*Establish your focus -- More often than not, the Blahs set in when
we’ve lost our focus or forget what our purpose it. We are no longer striving towards a goal or perhaps have just become so busy being busy that we focus on simply making it through the day. Look at each area of your life (probably the one you are complaining about most often is the one you need to look at first).

If you are bored at work, your focus may be on changing or enhancing
your career. If you are gaining weight and don’t like how your clothes fit you will be focusing on your health and fitness. If you feel distant from friends, you’ll be focused on your personal relationships.

*Visualize what you want it to look like – If you were completely
satisfied in this area of your life, what would it look like?
Work – what would be your ideal working environment?
Weight – how would your body look and feel at your ideal weight?
Friends – how would you like your closest friendships to look and
feel?

Set goals and break them down so you know where you’re going and how you’ll get there.

Work – become an expert in one area of your field, ask for more
responsibility, etc.
Weight – number of times you will work out during the week, weight
loss goals, and diet changes.
Friends – Which relationships would you like to deepen and how will
you do that?

Recruit Supporters– who can you recruit to either support you in
your efforts or do it with you? This may be a spouse, parent, friend,
classmate, colleague, etc. You want to gather people around you who are supportive of you and your goals, and will cheer you on and help you to stay motivated as you make these changes in your life.

Reward yourself when you reach mini-milestones. This is the fun
part. As you move closer to your goals, set up rewards along the way not only for incentive, but for fun as well.

Keep your eye on the prize if you lose motivation along the way, go
back to the visualization of how this area of your life will look and feel, once you reach your goal.
