Art of wood

So goes the riddle:

I am fire fretted
And I flirt with the wind;
My limbs are light freighted
I am lapped in flame.
I am storm stacked
And I strain to fly;
I’m a grove leaf bearing
And a glowing coal.

The answer is a beam of wood. And for some woodworkers, a beam of wood isn’t enough.

“I’m a native Grand Junction and so, nature and outdoors has always been a good sense of a topic of mine,” said Greg Vigil, a woodworking artist.

He’s one of many artists showing at the The Western Colorado Center for the Arts, part of The Art and Craft of Wood.

“I think that's what makes the art center so particular to this area. We, we are able to, to focus and do large scale signature shows like this where we're really able to delve into a media. And uh, I think that's one of the gifts we can give to this community. Is giving the work a lot of space and a lot of focus,” said Camille Silverman, Art Center curator and executive director.

And while the owner of his own woodworking business, Nathan Wismer is not contributing to the show, but still takes a creative approach to his work.

I'd say I concentrate more on the artistic type. Um, development of the piece. Kind of take it and let it go where it's going to go. And, um, use the customer's idea as my baseline," said Wismer.

The Art Center of Western Colorado is located off of 7th Street in Grand Junction, and The Art and Craft of Wood will show from the 3 August until August 29. More information can be found at gjartcenter.org.
