GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The reconstruction project began last summer but was halted in November to allow holiday shoppers easier access into the mall area.

C-DOT awarded the contract to Lawton Construction of Loveland for nearly $9.4 million. Of that amount, $4 million will be paid for by FASTER, or Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery safety fund

The project will continue in two phases. The first will involve both west-bound lanes being replaced, which will shift traffic to both east-bound lanes.

For the second phase, both eastbound lanes will be replaced, and traffic will be re-routed through both westbound lanes.

The turn lane will also eventually be replaced.

C-DOT says drivers will still be able to access Mesa Mall by the Highway, but at different entry points as the project evolves.

Improvements will include two additional driving lanes, a new storm sewer system, new concrete driving surface, updated signal system, lighting, curb, gutter and sidewalk, landscaping, signing and striping.

Work is expected to wrap up by mid-spring. Construction will be temporarily halted during inclement weather.
