In this case it's trade.

"We'll have regular customers that come in almost every weekend. They'll come with some item from their house they want to trade with one of the vendors," said Sam Ordonez, manager of the Grand Junction Flea Market.

Furniture is one of the more popular items at the flea market, and Ordonez hopes to expand in the near term, even offering entertainment.

Bartering is fairly common. If not with customers off the street then between the vendors themselves.

"As we get more vendors though, it will happen more often. And that's only because if they find something they'd like to have in their booth that's unusual or different um, they'll barter for it," said Ordonez.

And it's something that can be done online as well.

"They know who they're dealing with. When you go onto craigslist, you're not sure who is answering your ad. You don't really know much about the person. But when you're on Facebook, you at least know the first and last name of the person you're working with. You can look at their profile and see where they're from," said Adam Cochran, founder of the Grand Junction Bartering Club.

Bartering should be aware of keeping accurate records for tax purposes.

"You need to make sure you keep meticulous records. The same way that you would if you were running a cash and carry business where you receive cash or checks," said Dawn Rosier, CPA.

More businesses might adopt this idea, for reasons other than monetary.

"Everything is for sale or for trade, yeah. Everything on my table. I like to trade, that kinda goes into my belief system, too," said Seth Cain, a vendor at the Garnd Junction Flea Market.
